Born in New Jersey and raised around the world, I’m eternally curious. Whether wandering through China after college, wwoofing through Hawaii, or now living between NY, LA and Mexico City – I love natural remedies. Through my travels and (life) experience, I am continuously curious and fascinated by how foods from nature can be so healing and powerful.
Growing up in Basking Ridge, New Jersey and summering in Warsaw, my Polish mother Ewa, introduced me to a holistic lifestyle; reiki, reflexology, meditation and natural remedies. Part of that lifestyle meant that when I wasn’t feeling great, my mom would make me her ginger tea. She would peel the ginger root, slice it up, let it simmer on the stove for 30-40 minutes and then add lots of fresh lemon juice and a spoonful of honey. It always did the trick.
After college where I studied the culinary arts at Johnson and Wales and then Psychology at Fordham University, I worked on organic farms around the world. This furthered my inspiration and interest in a natural life and organic remedies. That interest led me to dream up Monfefo and my mission to help people feel good.
Monfefo first began in my kitchen in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York in 2013. I made my first batch and sold it to the local deli, Organic Planet, where I would always go for snacks. Babu, the store manager who knew me well, said sure he’d sell it!
The next day I received a phone call from Babu, “Justine we sold all the shots, send more!” I restocked him immediately and then I went to the deli across the street from Organic Planet and said “Babu is selling over 50 shots a week. You should too.” I had my second store. Soon enough, I was hand delivering Monfefo shots to over 20 stores in Brooklyn. The story and the business grows from there.
Come join me in the journey. With light and love, Justine Monsul
