As a child, my Polish mother, Ewa, introduced me to a holistic lifestyle; reiki, reflexology, meditation, and natural remedies.
As part of that lifestyle, when I wasn’t feeling great, she would always make me ginger tea with lemon and honey. She would peel the ginger root, slice it up, let it simmer on the stove for 30-40 minutes and then add lots of fresh lemon juice and a spoonful of honey. It always did the trick. Now you’re starting to see where I got the recipe for my first shot ever — The Ginger Shot? :)
As I got older, I worked on organic farms around the world furthering my inspiration and interest in a natural life and organic remedies. That interest led me to dream up Monfefo and my mission to help people feel good.
Monfefo first began in my kitchen in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York in 2013. I made my first batch and sold it to the local deli, Organic Planet, where I would always go for snacks. Babu, who knew me well, said sure he’d sell it!
The next day I received a phone call from Babu, “Justine we sold all the shots, send more!” I restocked him immediately and then I went to the deli across the street from Organic Planet. “Babu is selling over 50 shots a week. You should too.” I had my second store. Soon enough, I was hand delivering Monfefo Shots to over 20 stores in Brooklyn. The story goes and the business grows from there.
In early 2014, I moved from my own kitchen to a small industrial space where I built out my first factory. It was only 400 square feet. With a small but passionate team, and a lot of reggae music, we made a lot of shots serving the immediate tri-state region.
Then in Summer 2016, Monfefo achieved national recognition. We won BevNet’s New Beverage Showdown; named the best new beverage on the market.
As of Fall 2018, we are sold in the Northeast, Texas, and California and we still make every shot ourselves, patiently, and with a lot of care and attention.
